Changing Filament

    How to Change Filament

To change the filament on a MakerBot Replicator Mini:

    1. Make sure your MakerBot Replicator Mini printer is connected to your computer via Wi-Fi or the USB cable that came with your printer.

    2. In MakerBot Print, open the print monitor panel and select Filament and then Unload Filament.

    3. Wait for the Smart Extruder+/Smart Extruder to heat. When the extruder is fully heated, you’ll hear a sound and MakerBot Print will go from saying Preheating to Unloading Filament in the printer monitor panel.

    4. When unloading the filament, be sure to pinch the tabs on the side of the extruder together. This helps with relieving the tension placed on the filament and reduces the risk of a piece of filament breaking off inside the extruder.

    5. Remove the old spool and place the new spool of filament in the spool pocket/tray.

    6. Cut a clean end of your new filament to a create a clean edge.

    7. In the print monitor panel, select Filament and then Load Filament. Wait for the extruder to heat before loading filament. MakerBot Print will go from saying Preheating Extruder to Loading Filament.

    8. The extruder motor will turn to help you load. Push the filament into the loading tube until you can feel the motor pulling the filament in. Make sure to pinch the tabs on the side of the extruder together once more for this process. This will help avoid any jams during the loading process.

    9. When you see plastic emerging from the extruder nozzle, select Done.

Note: If you’re changing colors, you’ll need to run the Smart Extruder+/Smart Extruder for a few seconds to clear out the old color before clicking “Done”.

    Changing Filament During a Print

To change a spool that’s running low, or to create a print with layered colors, you can change filament during a print. In MakerBot Print, open the print monitor panel and select Filament and then Unload Filament. Follow the steps above to load new filament. Then select Resume to resume your print.

You will want to change filaments if the current spool is almost empty, to avoid any risk of clogging or jamming.

Once the extruder has finished unloading, wait for it to cool to at least 50 °C. Remove the last piece of filament from the extruder, then open the Print Monitor and click “Load Filament”. When you have finished the load sequence, click “Resume”.
