Cleaning The Drive Gear

When to Clean the Drive Gear

The drive gear is the part of the extruder that pushes filament through the extruder. When you make things with your Replicator 2X, small pieces of hardened plastic can stick to the drive gear and eventually clog it so it can't grab onto the filament. If you are having problems with your extruder, cleaning the drive gear might help.

How to Clean the Drive Gear

You can access the drive gear using the holes on the sides of the drive blocks. The drive block is part of a motor assembly on an extruder. Using a small instrument like a makeup brush, toothbrush or toothpick, remove all the pieces of filament stuck to the drive gear. Then select Utilities > Change Filament > Load to run the extruder motor. This will rotate the drive gear so that you can clean all sides of the drive gear.

You can also follow the steps in this video. It shows a Replicator 2, but the process is the same.
