Changing Filament

    How to Change Filament

The easiest way to change your filament on your MakerBot Replicator 2X is to use the LCD panel.

    1. Remove the enclosure lid from the top of the MakerBot Replicator 2X and set it aside.
    2. Go to the LCD panel and select Utilities > Filament Options, then select Unload for the nozzle you wish to unload.
    3. Wait for the extruder to heat. Once it has heated to the set temperature, pull the filament free of the extruder.
    4. Remove the old spool and replace it with the new spool.
    5. Detach the filament guide tube on the extruder you want to load, and feed the MakerBot ABS Filament through the filament guide tube.
    6. Go to the LCD panel and select Utilities > Change Filament and then select Load Right or Load Left depending on which extruder you are working with. The MakerBot Replicator 2X will start to heat the extruder.
    7. When the extruder is heated, the LCD panel will prompt you to load the filament into the extruder. Click through the message until your MakerBot Replicator 2X asks you to press the M when you see plastic extruding.
    8. Insert the free end of the filament into the hole in the top of the extruder. Push the filament in as far as it will go. You will see plastic start to emerge from the extruder nozzle.
    9. Once you see plastic emerging from the extruder nozzle, press the M button to stop extrusion. Note: If you're changing colors, you'll need to run the extruder for a few moments to clear out the old color before stopping extrusion. If you're changing materials, it can take even longer -- make sure that all the old material is extruded before you start a new print.
    10. Push the guide tube back into the opening on the top of the extruder.

    Changing Filament During a Print

You can change filament during the print process to create a print with layered colors. Press the left arrow button to get to the Active Build menu, then select Change Filament. The extruders will move away from your print. Select Unload for the nozzle you wish to unload, then replace the spool and filament as you did in the steps above. After you change the filament, select the left arrow button to return to the Active Build menu. Select the entry for Resume Print.

    Using MakerBot Desktop

*The MakerBot Print software will be unable to detect this model via USB cable. Only MakerBot Desktop Software can be used for this function.

You can also load and unload filament using MakerBot Desktop.

    1. Connect your MakerBot Replicator 2X to your computer using the USB cable that came with your MakerBot Replicator 2X.
    2. In MakerBot Desktop, open the print monitor panel and select Change > Unload for the extruder you're working with.
    3. Wait for the extruder to heat. When the extruder is fully heated, you'll hear a sound and MakerBot Desktop will display an image indicating that you can now unload the filament.
    4. Remove the old spool and replace it with the new spool.
    5. In the print monitor panel, select Change > Load. Wait for the extruder to heat before loading the filament.
    6. Push the filament into the extruder's loading tube until you can feel the motor pulling the filament in. When you see plastic emerging from the extruder nozzle, click Done.
Note: If you're changing colors, you'll need to run the extruder for a few moments to clear out the old color before clicking Done. If you're changing materials, it can take even longer -- make sure that all the old material is extruded before you start a new print.
