OpenGL Requirements for MakerBot Desktop

If MakerBot Desktop crashes repeatedly when you’re in the Prepare tab, or if you’re experiencing issues with the graphics in the software, then your computer’s GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) may either not be OpenGL (Open Graphics Library) 2.1-capable, or the GPU’s driver software may need to be updated. Related issues can include the Prepare and Print Preview screens not displaying normally.

    OpenGL Requirements for MakerBot Desktop

In order for MakerBot Desktop to function properly, your computer must have an OpenGL 2.1-compliant GPU. The following is a list of GPUs (brands and series) that are OpenGL 2.1-compliant:

    • the GMA 4500 series

    • the Intel HD Graphics series

    • the Radeon HD 2000 series

    • the ATI FireGL series GPUs made after 2007

    • the GeForce FX series

    • the GeForce 100 series

How to Check Your Type of GPU

    On a PC:

    1. From the Start menu, click Control Panel.

    2. Select Hardware and Sound.

    3. Under Devices and Printers, select Device Manager.

    4. In the Device Manager window, double click Display adapters to expand the menu. Your GPU will be listed here.

    On a Mac:

    1. Click on the Apple menu and select About this Mac.

    2. Click on More Info. Your GPU will be listed there, under Graphics.

    Next Steps

If your GPU is one of the types listed above, the next step is to check for an update for its driver software. Continue on to the next section for instructions on this.

If your GPU is not one of the types listed above, but it is a discrete or dedicated GPU, which means it has its own independent source of video memory, you may be able to swap it out for a compliant model as long as it is compatible with your hardware and there is enough space to install the replacement. Visit the appropriate manufacturer’s website to get more information on swapping out your GPU. If your GPU is integrated, it is not replaceable, and you may continue to have problems running MakerBot Desktop.

    Updating Your GPU Driver Software

If you have your computer set up to update any software automatically after routine update searches, your GPU driver software will be included in that. If your computer does not automatically run software updates, do the following:

    On a PC:

    1. With the Display adapters menu expanded, right-click on your GPU, and select Update Driver Software….

    2. Select Search automatically for updated driver software. Your computer will search online for driver software updates.

    3. If your computer finds an update, run the update, restart your computer, and try using MakerBot Desktop. If your computer determines the driver software is up to date, visit your GPU manufacturer’s website and follow their instructions for updating your driver.

    On a Mac:

    1. With the More Info window open, click on Software Update.

    2. When the updates are complete, restart your computer and try using MakerBot Desktop again.
