How to Tighten the X and Y-Axis Belts

    If your prints are slanted or have shifting layers, it may be time to tighten both the X-axis and Y-axis belts on your MakerBot Replicator. To do this, you will need the 2.5 mm hex wrench that was included with your MakerBot Replicator.

    Tightening the X-Axis Belt

    1. Move the gantry to the front of your MakerBot Replicator.

    2. Use the 2.5 mm hex wrench to loosen the four screws on that are attached to the X-axis motor on the right side of the gantry. Do not remove the screws altogether.

    3. Pull the gantry to the middle of the MakerBot Replicator. Hold the motor and pull on it to create tension on the belt.

    4. While continuing to pull the gantry, use the 2.5 mm hex wrench to re-tighten the four screws on the X-axis motor.

    It may help to watch the following video. A MakerBot Replicator 2 is used in the video, but the process of tightening the X-axis belt on the MakerBot Replicator (Original) is similar:

    Tightening the Y-Axis Belt

    1. Locate the Y-axis motor harness on the back right side of your MakerBot Replicator.

    2. Use the 2.5 mm hex wrench to loosen the four bolts that attach the Y-axis motor harness to the frame. Do not remove these altogether.

    3. Push down firmly on the Y-axis motor to move it down in its slots and create tension on the belt.

    4. Tighten the bolts that attach the Y-axis motor to the frame. This will lock it in place to help maintain the tension on the Y-axis belt.
