How to Tighten the Drive Gear Set Screw

If the drive gear on your extruder motor is loose, it can lead to extrusion issues for your MakerBot Replicator including slanted or shifting prints.

To tighten the drive gear set screw, you will need the 2.5 mm and 1.5 mm hex wrenches that came in your accessory box. Then follow these instructions:

    1. On the LCD menu, select Utilities > Filament Options and then select Unload to remove the filament from your MK8 Stepstruder.

    2. Turn off and unplug your MakerBot Replicator.

    3. Using the 2.5 mm hex wrench, loosen the screws on the front of the right fan on the extruder. Then loosen the two screws on the top of the extruder assembly. Do not remove the screws altogether.

    4. Remove the fan assembly as one unit and move it to the side.

    5. Unclip the wire harness from top of the extruder motor. Remove the motor from the extruder assembly.

    6. Locate the drive gear on the motor. Turn the drive gear by hand until you can see the set screw:

    7. Use the 1.5 mm hex wrench to tighten the set screw.

    8. Reinsert the motor back into the extruder assembly. Reattach the wire harness, and replace the fan. Use the 2.5 mm hex wrench to tighten the screws on the front of the fan and the top of the extruder assembly. Do not over-tighten the screws.
