Replicator 2 stops extruding (either starts clicking or silently stops)

My Replicator 2 can never finish a print. It looks like it's going well for the first few layers, and then it either starts clicking or it silently stops extruding.
I'm pretty sure this is a problem with the plunger. When it's too tight it does the clicking, and when it's too loose it silently stops extruding. Last night I tried to print out the shark on the SD card as a test, and then adjust the plunger after each test and retry. Well, I printed 15 sharks, each time having to load/unload the filament after an inevitable failed print, and the thing still won't extrude properly. It's at a point now where I can't tighten/loosen it at all without having one problem or the other.
I've tried cleaning the drive gear, tightening the drive gear as much as I can, leveling the build platform, double/triple checking to make sure everything is where it should be... nothing helps.
I got my Replicator 2 last week and so far it has been a nightmare. I've spent 30+ hours trying to debug why this thing won't extrude properly. I might get one successful print for every 25 failed prints. The reason I bought a Replicator 2 and not one of their competitors products is because I didn't want to do this kind of tinkering. I want to love this machine, but I'm so frustrated and tired of failed prints.
